From our friends at Park Slope Parents comes word via an email that the energy scammers we’ve devoted more posts to than we ever thought we would are working the Slope too. Per an email:
A man just knocked on my door and when I asked who it was he said IDT/Con-Ed. When I told him I hadn’t called Con Ed he started knocking on the door next to mine. I then opened the door and asked to see his id. When he flashed it I said that didn’t look like any Con Ed id I’d ever seen and he defensively said “I said I was from IDT/Con Ed” I then asked him to please leave the building because we do not allow people to do solicitations. He said he had just spoken to the super and I said that I didn’t care…I was asking him to leave. He then caught an attitude with me and said I was doing this because he was a black man. I said it had nothing to do with that and that it was becuase of a scam I had been hearing about. He said he was “just doing his job” and I said I wished him well but that he couldn’t do it here.
And, for good measure, here’s another one from the PSP email list:
I had the same experience two days ago but the guy said he was there to give me a tax refund–all I had to do was show him the numbers on the back of my Con Ed or National Grid bill. When I asked to see the
papers he was carrying he refused. I asked for a number to check the info and he refused again. I told him I didn’t have a single bill in the house and couldn’t get him the numbers he needed. He looked
dejected and left. It’s clearly a scam–I would have confronted him but I was alone with two kids. Hope no one gets scammed!!
Hate to break it to the good people of Park Slope, but lots of people are getting scammed.

People should start calling the cops on them. This is getting out of hand.

I just had the same thing happen to me in Queens–they say they are “IDT under Con Ed.” They said that people had been complaining about high electricity costs, so they were coming around to get residents a better rate. Then asked how could they do that considering how low my bills are anyway. They claimed that they could offer a reduction of taxes, then they proceeded to ask to see my latest bill, which I declined to show them. Just looked too sketchy. Glad I let them go on their way!
