Among the many places those new glassy bus shelters have popped up in recent weeks is Columbia Street in Red Hook. We’re still not sure how we feel about them as part of the streetscape, although we suppose we more like them than not. We like that they’re labeled as to location of the stop, which is a help to riders who may not know the bus route they’re using, and we think they’re nicer than the shelters they replace. Regardless, we might as well get used to them as 3,300 of them will be installed over time.

I think they’re quite nice, actually. Whats not to like? The glass leaves less of a visual imprint, and they even have a bench! Is it because they aren’t made out of brick or limestome?

Just like the ones in Europe. It’s about time we finally modernize with glass and less chewing gum. As long as no one comes along and kicks them in.(god forbid it would take years to replace- unlike most developed countries) Keeps you from getting wet and protects you from wind too. Gets my approval!

Look at them things, shining like a new dime! Very nice indeed. I hope they stay that way. Alas, back in the Old Country I saw many a similar attempt to keep these shelters spiffy over the years. They dont tend to last long I am afraid. I hope pepple dont just mistake them for another public bulletin board advertising guitar lessons or what have you.

Wondering if anyone knows about the traffic flow of the street? I have one of the bus shelters right in front of my apartment (it’s not that wide of a sidewalk on the west side of Columbia and Carroll)…but the crazy thing is that now that it’s a one way street the there is no functional stop there as there’s no traffic heading south down Columbia. Ideas?
