We almost hesitate to post this photo because it’s so freaking foul. It and some others were sent to us by a GL reader who submitted it in order to share the situation on Ninth Street between Second and Third Avenue in Gowanus that it depicted. Call it Garbage Porn. Of the trash company whose vehicle is shown our reader wrote:
They park their truck all day and night on 9th street and clean them on 9th street as well. This causes the sewege et al to drain in front of all the houses and into the drains…
Our friendly Gmail service thoughtfully sorted this email into our spam folder, so we don’t know if the problem has been resolved or not. Even if it was taken care of, though, imagine this funky crap marinating in August heat and humidity. We’ve seen and smelled disgusting garbage trucks in our lives, but what the hell was in that thing? Our apologies if you’ve viewed this photo right before or after a meal.

Problems with garbage trucks in Gowanus? Get outta town! Last week I was riding my bicycle on the bikepath headed south on 3rd avenue when I heard a loud honking behind me. It was a private sanitation truck trying to pass traffic on the right by driving on the bikepath.
When I finally just stopped in the middle of the bike path, they pulled back into traffic, slopping gallons of foul smelling liquid out the back every time the trcuk hit a bump.

I live on 9th street and, yes, the company, Grace Carting, continues to park their trucks filled with garbage on the street despite the fact that they have a garage. They leave them on the street overnight and on the weekends, including this past weekend (Memorial Day) when everyone was trying to enjoy being home. Little kids play on this block. This is simply unacceptable. Why doesn’t the city do something about this? They should be fined for obstructing traffic not to mention the environmental hazards they are posing to nearby residents. Talk about nasty neighbors…I’m not looking forward to the summer smell…

I share your disgust with this situation on 9th st. i have been in their office complaining. You see how effective its been. Well instead of complaining to each other call the NYC Business Intergrity Commission at 212-676-6280. They handle all complaints pertaining to Private Sanitation issues. DO IT!
