Another 99 Cent Store Gone on Fifth Avenue

Former 99 Cent Store Fifth Avenue

This is one of the 99 cent stores on Fifth Avenue in Park Slope near Fourteenth Street. We don’t know what it’s slated to become, but we’re pretty sure it’s part of the slow change that overtaking Fifth Avenue south of Ninth Street. Another bank branch? A cell phone store? New restaurant? Chain retail of some sort? We’ll know soon enough.

Personally, I don’t think Fifth Avenue around Ninth Street has enough drug store chains. One on all four corners simply doesn’t cut it. I call for three on every block. This is a capitalist society, dammit!

I’d be saddened by this, if it weren’t for the fact that 99 cent stores stink. Back in the day—like 10 years ago—when the 99 cent store craze began, the places were filled with great overstock merchandise from real stores. Quality stuff and even some vintage stuff from the 1970s.

That’s when discount stores in NYC operated as clearing houses for the larger department stores.

Nowadays, with Target, K-Mart, and chain stores dominating NYC there’s no need for clearance discounters. So these 99 cent stores are just filled with cheap/crazy junk from wherever they get it. Jack’s 99 Cent Store is quite probably the last of the true clearance stores around. The rest of them? Not worth the price. Especially for since the bath/beauty stuff is filled with questionable ingredients. And the cups and plastic utensils are filled with toxins that are far from good for you.

Long live Mays! Long live Korvette’s! Long live Odd Lot, Job Lot and even barely-alive Weber’s. Forget about these 99 cent stores. They just aren’t worth it anymore.
