Workers were busy inside the future 7-Eleven on Fifth Avenue in the South Slope yesterday and we found the corporate logo on the door and a poster in the window. The home of the Big Gulp will be located between 13th and 14th Streets. We noted the demise of the former tenant–one of the South Slope’s vanishing 99 cent stores, when it went out business in the fall. Brownstoner broke the news of the South Slope Slurpee outpost in early January.

Sad yes. No one wants more corporate overlords. But, I believe they sell Bawls energy drink. That stuff is like crack. Does anyone know of any other place that sells Bawls? It’s been hit and miss for me browsing through random places in Madhattan.

What, exactly, is this 7-11 going to offer that can’t already be found within a two block radius of this location? For real, what value is this going to add in any way to the neighborhood, except raising the bar on how much rent a tenant [esp. a chain store] is willing to pay for space along this stretch of 5th avenue?

while i’d prefer no 7-11 around the corner from my home on 12th St & 5th, I’ll see one benefit: I’m a Citibank customer and 7-11 has Citibank cash machines. I’ll no longer have to hoof it all the way to 7th Ave and President to get cash without getting nailed with an ATM fee.
