Here’s the latest little uplifting incident that caught our eye in Boerum Hill: a car vandalized via shooting. Here are the details, via an email from the Boerum Hill Group on Yahoo:
I thought everyone should know that the car vandalism problem is excalating. This family lives on Bergen between Bond & Hoyt. They parked their car on Bond last night, near their house. They came out this morning to find several bullet holes in it. Yes, they have reported this to the police.
Last week another friend on the same block parked a rental car on the block and came out to find someone had kicked numerous dents in it during the night. That kind of vandalism is bad enough, but escalating to guns??? This is out of hand.
So far, no emails about anyone hearing gunshots on Bergen Street.
(Note: the bullet hole shown is not an actual Bergen Street car bullet hole.)

Yeah, I’ve lived in Boerum Hill for about 13 years now, and I pretty much hear gunshots coming from who knows where (though my bedroom faces Bergen Street) at least once a month, sometimes followed by the sound of sirens, sometimes not. Actually it used to be more like once a week in the old days, not to mention people running down Wyckoff Street actually shooting at each other. I’m consistently amazed that you people think just because movie stars live in your ‘hood and you paid a million bucks for your house and you can buy artisanal cheeses on Smith Street, that all the “bad” stuff in gone. It’s not and it never will be. That’s what New York is all about. If you can’t take it, they I guess you need to go back to wherever you came from.

Ummmm Crimes happen folks if you think the NYPD is not doing a good job go live in a suburban area and deal with a town sheriff. See how you like that i bet you wont.

and to that last post, no need to send people away…and may i remind you that the suburban areas are where all these school shootings occur, so they’re not living in the utopia we all imagine.

I just wandered onto this page, but have to comment… Someone describes a crime, and three ohters post a reply basically saying… this is brooklyn, get used to it. So is that what you would do if had them in front of you… just shrug and say get out if you don’t like it? JERKS.

The person who posted the original comment on the Boerum Hill egroup is usually taken with a large grain of salt. In this case he appears to have gotten his facts wrong. The car was not shot up on Bond but somewhere else. The car owner then drove it to Bond.
I’ve lived in Boerum Hill as long as 6:24, and I believe random gunshots are a dangerous, bad thing. Violent crime does not have to be an accepted part of living in NYC, although as long as apathetic wannabe nihilists fail to report it, it might well continue to be.

I am the original poster, and I am not neither apathetic or nihilistic, I just think people need a dose of reality to keep themselves safe. They think because they pay a lot of money for rent or their homes cost a lot that they are safe from crime, and that is an illusion, and because of it they are not smart about keeping themselves safe, for example walking around at night with their ipods or other behaviors that open them up to assault. And in response to the comment about reporting gunshots, it’s impossible to even tell what direction they are coming from since the sound carries so much, much less be able to convey that to the police. Yes, I think the crime is bad, but it’s also an unavoidable part of life in NYC, regardless of whether you think you live in some sort a protective bubble.
