Myrtle the Turtle Update: News Spreads

May 6th, 2008 · 5 Comments

The story we had yesterday about the poor Williamsburg turtle that got a neon pink paint job, possibly at the hands of construction workers, continues to spread. Myrtle was the subject of an amNY story this morning and is now being carried on 1010 Wins. A sample of the 1010 story: “A box turtle that’s become somewhat of an icon in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn has become the victim of a cruel prank. Myrtle, as the turtle is known, was discovered last week painted a bright shade of orange. Neighbors blame a group of construction workers who apparently have no heart and nothing better to do.” We believe that WCBS TV is also doing a story on Myrtle. At last word, Myrtle had been released back into the backyard. We also received a lot of helpful tips about how to get the paint from her shell.

Released back into the yard? so theres a construction/excavation site with a ton of documented problems adjacent to your property, your slow moving defenseless turtle has been abused, and its not careless to leave it back in your yard?

My neighbor repaired the fence, so the turtle can’t get back into the excavation site. He’s lived out there for 10+ years and has always seemed content, so it seems cruel to bring him inside. We’re talking about taking him to a turtle sanctuary though.

I have a greek tortoise in L.I.C. In the winter he has his own room in the house and in the summer he lives in the garden. Great pet. To ANON if you were a turtle /tortoise where would you rather live some small tank or the back yard? Don’t worry construction workers won’t be there forever, they can’t afford the neighborhood.

Maybe someone from the neighborhood should have a little in your face chat with those construction workers.
