Brookbit: Late Night Fireworks

May 11th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Per a reader email last night after midnight: “Know anything about the fireworks that were tonight (Sunday) at midnight? Like, some of us in Brooklyn need to sleep. Is this even legal?” We heard them in the distance too. Apparently, there have been late night fireworks over New Jersey several times in the last week, although the weekday versions seemed to be earlier.–GL Inbox

I heard them. I live on 3rd st in Park Slope. I thought I was dreaming, because do fireworks happen at this time of year? At this time of night? I started to dream that we had become involved in the 3rd world war. I woke up this morning exhausted!

I heard them and saw them They were actually quite spectacular and lasted from about 11:40 to midnight. But why? I have seen and heard them from this location many times and on odd nights (I live on 7th Avenue on the top floor and my rear windows look out to the Statue of Liberty and lower Manhattan) . They seem to be in New Jersey to the right of the Statue.
