Yesterday Brooklyn Based ran a round up of organized open paddles and boat rides on the Brooklyn waterfront (and Prospect Park), but we ran out of room to mention anything about sailing, because it’s not something you just get out on the water and “do” — there’s all that lingo to learn (jib, keel, leeward), and all those sails to figure out… But if you’ve ever wanted to sail, the Sebago Canoe Club in Canarsie offers its members classes June 28 and 29. Details are on Sail Brooklyn, which also tipped us off to the fact that the only time non-members can sail in Jamaica Bay with the SCC is during their open house May 24th.
But another hidden perk of membership is the club’s Depression-era cabin at Lake Sebago at Harriman Park near Bear Mountain (home of the original SCC), which is open to members who want to spend the night there and perfect their paddling. There are tiny fees and fine print (listed here) but it’s still a cheap upstate getaway.
