Fifth Avenue in Park Slope now has a Park Slope 5th Avenue Business Improvement District (BID). The district will cover the area from Dean to 18th Streets. It was approved yesterday by the City Council. A statement from City Council Member Bill de Blasio said: “I commend the 5th Avenue Merchants Association for helping make this a reality. BIDs are a great way to improve and maintain commercial strips. 5th Ave is already a trendy destination because of its wide array of restaurants and shops, and the BID will only increase the popularity of the area.” The BID’s services will include maintenance/sanitation, a security program, marketing and promotion of local businesses, economic development, administration and holiday lighting.

Funny, the pizzeria in the picture is now closed. There has been a “for rent’ sign there for at least 2 weeks.
5th ave could use some good pizza to go.

Why in the hell does Park Slope need a BID?
5th Ave is doing well enough for itself; it’s been on a steady upward climb for years, and should be able to “fend for itself”.
Why not put this (public) money into areas like Bed-Stuy/Crown Heights, Flatbush, etc that could really, really benefit from it? This seems absurd.

What??? That has been my favorite pizza joint since 1989. This is very sad. I assume it will be in old timer food joint heaven along with the Doughtnut place. I just thought the photo caught it while it was closed in the AM, not CLOSED for good. Sad…vey sad. They had BIG, greasy, cheesy slices on a paper plate.

What public money?
The funds for the BID come from a special tax assessed on the properties along 5th Ave. itself.
Any commercial strip that wants to impose a tax on itself (and can obtain permission from the city council) is free to set up a BID.

As a 5th avenue commercial property owner I see this as a good idea. Hopefully this will make 5th ave a greater destination point then it already is.

I am so happy to hear about the creation of the BID on 5th avenue. I live on 5th and it used to be littered all the time… things are so much better since the BID… they already organized an art fair and i hope things like that will continue to happen…

most people, especially the hipster type, dont know what the heck they are talking about. they use the internet as a way to wine and complain about everything. A BID is a self imposed tax assessment from property owners and this money is used to run a BID. BIDs are responsible for the safety and maintenance of an area too. And for his info (I am assuming this hipster is a he, WHAAAA) Bed Stuy and Crown Heights do have BIDS. he can go to the SBS site and see a listing of all 60 bids in the boroughs. get a life. Keep up the good work Park Slope Fifth Avenue BID.
