Ikea Mania #1: It’s Ikea Shuttle & Plaza Time

Ikea Shuttle

When we were picturing the Ikea Shuttle, we were thinking of mini-bus type vehicles. The buses now cruising the streets of Park Slope, Gowanus and Red Hook, however, are a little bigger than that. Here’s one of the shuttles outside of Ikea on Saturday parked outside of “Ikea Plaza,” aka Beard Street. Today’s times has a story about how Red Hook is bracing for the onslaught of cars, estimated to be up to 14,000-17,000 on weekend days.

I biked down to the IKEA the other say just to look it over. When I lived in Red Hook five years ago I used to ride down Columbia Street to watch the ball games in the ballfields now across from IKEA. On Sundays in the summer it was always a great scene: Exciting ball games, families barbecuing, strolling singers with guitars. Otherwise all was quiet and peaceful near the Todd triangle. I guess now IKEA is where the old Todd Shipyard used to be where my ship tied up in 1964 and was overhauled. After Wednesday I won’t be able to view the area with nostalgia. After surveying the whole IKEA setup and the parking lot that holds 1400 cars I was sort of dismayed. Traffic will be backed up to Brooklyn Battery Tunnel on the weekends. I don’t imagine there will be too many more years of ball games in those fields. I assume that they may have to build a special bridge across from the BQE to the Erie Basin piers wiping out the fields..
