After the Storm: Behold, the Ninth Street Lagoon

Saturday’s most thunderstorm in late afternoon apparently caused some of the usual flooding issues near the Gowanus Canal. These are scenes from Ninth Street near the Lowe’s, where flooding is common during big downpours and rainstorms. A series of photos taken on Ninth Street yesterday evening around 7PM was placed in our GL Photo Pool by donflan. The good news is that the bus made it. On the bright side, we don’t have any reports of manhole covers flying off and sewage geysers erupting in the street as has also been known to happen near Brooklyn’s Grand Canal, and the waters did recede by later in the evening. Also encouraging: the water in the photos is not from the Gowanus Canal.

Cheers, I’m glad you ran these. I hadn’t seen the flooding here before and was pretty stunned to see the extend of the temporary lake. Great site; I hope to contribute more in future.

Thanks for posting these! I was about to walk to Lowe’s when the rain hit so I waited til the deluge passed and lo and behold was greeted with the above sight. I was kicking myself that I didn’t have my camera (on the other hand, why would I take a camera to Lowe’s?) My favorite was a guy on a Harley who sat there for two or three minutes contemplating riding through it.

Funny thing I had driven down 9th street just about fifteen minutes before and got home as the winds picked up and the great crash of water began. . . Good thing I wasn’t on my bike because I never would have made it. . . I expended a little carbon that day. . . I’m not in trouble, am I?

This is what much of New York will look like with ten more years of ice cap meltdown.

That’s the lagoon that killed my car during the tornado thing last August. I was nine months pregnant and we got stuck in the middle even though all the cars ahead of us and behind us made it through. No one helped us push for ages. Some teenagers laughed and took pictures of my husband trying to push the car. Eventually some guys took pity on us and we left the car in the Lowe’s parking lot to dry out. But it didn’t. A week later we found out while I was at the hospital about to have the baby that the car had been declared “totaled.” That lagoon makes me angry all over again. And also brings back the feeling of being very, very stupid to think I could drive through it. Always listen to your intuition, folks.
