The Philharmonic played Prospect Park on a night that escaped being marred by any storms. There was a large turnout for the annual show and it concluded with a small fireworks display. There were picnics, many families and, of course, the sounds of the Phil. STG54, who shot the photo above, has a full flickr set of the evening, which is totally worth checking out.

I woke up Monday morning, and being a teacher with the summer off, I decided to treat myself to a lazy morning of television. A rare indulgence, which fortunately revealed that The Philharmonic was performing at Prospect Park that evening. Being a New York transplant whose been in Jersey too many years, I called a friend in Queens with a good sense of direction.
I made it across river in record time despite the All-Star Yankee Game, hiked across the Park with blankets in tow, and was treated to the soulful music of Brahms and Beethoven. Incredible. It was exciting to watch Alan Gilbert conduct, even from a distance. It was clear he loved every minute of it. Before the concert, I was hoping for a clear night sky, but the haze-masked (nearly full) moon seemed much more befitting to listening to Beethoven.
A magical, soothing evening. A perfect end to the day. If I lived in Brooklyn, I’d be at every event in Prospect Park. As it is, I’ll be checking the website and hopefully making it back for one or two before my summer ends (as long as my good friend drives with me.)
