Great for kids and parents: Songs In The Key Of New York, Saturday, August 16, 3 p.m. at the Lefferts Historic House. FREE. Come to the Lefferts Historic House for a special concert celebrating “Songs In The Key Of New York” a new record which features a collection of original songs about New York for children and parents alike. It is one of the first ever children’s records written exclusively about New York City. Songs In The Key Of New York is led by musicians/educators, Jeremy Zmuda and Clare Manchon. Their songs include “Subways All Ways”, “Taxi”, “Bridges and Tunnels”, and “Five Boroughs” just to name a few. Call (718) 789-2822 for more information. Also visit www.songsinthekeyofnewyork.com.

Great for kids and teens: Youth Council Harvest & Open House Saturday, August 16, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., at the Youth Resource Center at Bowling Green Cottage (at the Parade Ground). FREE. Join the members of the Prospect Park Alliance Youth Council as they harvest their home grown produce, including pumpkin squash, carrots, broccoli, peas, and cucumbers. Great for adults: Twilight Tours, Thursdays through August 28, 6:30 p.m. – 8:30, at the Prospect Park Audubon Center. Enjoy a romantic evening of wine and cheese on the charming Audubon Center balcony; then tour the Park’s majestic Lullwater on our electric boat Independence. After your ride, go on an Audubon naturalist-guided exploration of the Park’s nature trails (including a chance to meet the Park’s bat population). The algae bloom in the background of this photo is astonishing. I saw algae bloom covering almost the entire surface of a large pond in Central Park a few weeks ago. It’s not a good sign for the vitality of the bodies of water in the parks. :^(

That green around the boat is actually duckweed. All the duckweed in the lake drifts west and ends up in the far inlet called the lullwater where this picture was taken. If there was less nitrogen there would indeed be less duckweed, but since this is not algae and it is the whole lake’s production it is not as much a danger sign as it seems..
