We’ve gotten several emails about the closure of Cafe Carciofo on Court Street at Kane, which has been a popular neighborhood spot for years. One tipster writes: “Great old restaurant on Kane & Court. Signs in the window say: ‘We will not be reopening. Family business shut down by DOH. Inspectors laughed and told us to ‘Enjoy’ after they put these stickers up. Been here 18 years and we’ve never failed an inspection… We won’t be back.’ Too bad…” Another local readers writes: “It’s a sad note to have to post. It seemed a popular, well-filled spot any time I walked by.”

I walk past this place every day going to and from work. I can see the kitchen through the window on Kane street and have always thought it looked discusting in there, so this is no surprise. It’s a great corner location, hopefully a decent place will open up there, but let’s face it we all know it’s going to be a bank.

I haven’t been there in years, but it was the first “nice” place I went to when I lived in Carroll Gardens. Hopefully what goes around comes around, and the inspectors will have a traffic agent laugh and say “Enjoy!” as they leave a ticket on their car. There’s no need to be nasty when you’re doing your job.

This place is an institution in the neighborhood. It has been there longer than I have been in the neighborhood (16 years) and it has always been amazing. I think that it is a tremendous loss if it goes away. I would be very surprised if the inspection was legitimate.

That it managed 18 years is probably worth a note somewhere in Guinness. Anyway, no surprise that it was shut down, given some of the stink that came from the open kitchen door on Kane. Hopefully something better will come along–the space/location is superb.

I’ve lived up the block from this place since for nearly 15 years. During the last 3 or 4, it has gone way downhill. The fod hasn’t been very good. the menu hasn’t been intersting. Old favorites were taken off the menu and would no longer be made by request. The service sucked.
I loved the place – it was my favorite. But there is a reason we haven’t gone in years. My hunch is the DOH gave them the catalyst to finally close it. It seemed neglected in many ways.
The location is awesome. Hopefully something truly wonderul will go there. the only thing I’ll miss is the memories.

Around the corner from me… walked by today and noticed that while the closure notice is still up, the flyers made by the owner are now all gone – maybe they got a chance to re-open or something? Either way, situation is developing.

The food wasn’t very good IMO and we always hoped it would become a better restaurant – such a great location!

97 violations found during the inspection that took place on July 29, well that’s a bit much… especially if you consider the historic:
Violation points: 46 Inspected on July 11, 2008.
Violation points: 19 Inspected on January 25, 2007.
In other words THEY IGNORE the inspectors requests… Well deserved closure (even if it was one of my favorite place…)
