Bklink: LiMandri to Be Named DOB Commissioner

August 15th, 2008 · 1 Comment

link-asterisk.jpg“Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg announced on his weekly WABC radio appearance this morning that he intended to promote his acting buildings commissioner, Robert D. LiMandri, to head the troubled department permanently. Mr. LiMandri will take the position left open after Patricia J. Lancaster resigned under pressure in April after a series of deadly construction crane accidents at work sites overseen by the agency.” The promotion has been expected.–CityRoom

Despite LiMandri’s positive points, this blurb does not even mention the real story – that the requirement that the DOB Commissioner be a licensed architect or engineer is being removed, via a bill that got through the City Counsel today and will be approved by the Mayor Monday.

This makes about as much sense as having the Surgeon General not be a doctor or the Supreme Court not be attorneys. Where is the outrage about this dilution of professional responsibility and accountability, which will surely haunt the city for years to come? Let LiMandri be Deputy Commissioner if he is so politically useful, but put a qualified professional in charge.
