String Quartets Replacing Tire Shops on Fourth Avenue (Gowanus Side)

August 20th, 2008 · 6 Comments

Oh, how times change. As if all the new buildings that have gone up and continue to go up on Fourth Avenue, taking out some of the more traditional businesses like garages and auto body shops along the way aren’t enough evidence of massive change on Fourth Avenue. (Plus things like eye glass shops and new eateries and bars.) We now have the Ganesh String Quartet that was playing on Fourth Avenue yesterday evening. A Special GL Correspondent files the photo and writes: “The ganesh string quartet playing on 4th ave by the union st station tonight. Surreal and wonderful!” The photo was taken around 6PM, but the quartet was still reported to be playing around 7PM. Ah, Brooklyn’s New Park Avenue, you do not disappoint. For the most part.

This may be the single most vivid (and yes, surreal) image of gentrification that I’ve ever seen…

Have to agree with Brenda; simply breathtaking.

And yo – gentrified or not, I’m not the only brotha on 4th ave who’d throw a hurtin on those white chicks! Lookit those legs: Damn girls; alright.

Yes I was amazed – and that corrugated iron backdrop to the black dresses says it all. They are playing at Root Hill Cafe on Saturday evening, in case you want to enjoy the music sans the traffic 🙂

I’m leaning on the side of this being very cool. But it blows my mind that 20 years ago, my mom would walk out of that very station exit—with knife in her purse—so she could go to work at a sweatshop down on Carroll Street.

Gentrification? Don’t be ridiculous. This is Park Slope we’re talking about after all.

    It’s not Park Slope.
