A GL reader writes with a scream of pain about an awful ruckus caused by the city or Con Ed at Hicks and Kane Street in the middle of the night. We have no idea what it was about (other than the fact that it would seem to obscene barring some sort of absolute emergency), but perhaps someone does. Here’s the email we got:
Do you happen to know what is going on with the street work at hicks and kane. Last night, they had stadium lights shining through our window, then at roughly 1:30am turned on some drilling/air machine that sounded like a bomb and shook our whole apartment. Seems incredibly intrusive and horribly loud for 1:30 in the morning. It set off every car alarm within 4 blocks and I’m sure woke the whole neighborhood. If this is the city, can they do this kind of loud work at that hour without it being an emergency?
Sounds like a fun night.

im about 5 houses in from hicks; south of Kane.. had very similiar experience during the debate; apartment rumble; crazy sounds.
i took it in stride; amazaing how you get used to noises living in the city.
guess it is better than the traffic nightmare that doing the work during the day would cause. think of large trucks and pissed off drivers flying around the side streets.. not that they dont now!

Some years back, when I was living on State St/ near Bond in Boerum Hill, I was at home and heard a huge explosion. My apartment rattled. My dad was on the phone with me and HE heard it. I didn’t freak out. I just said, “I think something just exploded,” and he and I continued our conversation for a bit. Then, I heard the helicopters and I said, “Yup. Something must’ve exploded.” Found out the next day it was a brownstone on the next block and 3 people died in a gas explosion.
But you’re right, you hear weird stuff here all the time, but you try not to overreact. More than likely, it’s nothing. And if it IS something, unless someone died, you’ll only find out what it is from the blogs.
