There are many photos this morning of Brookynites going wild after Barack Obama won the election. It was a celebration not unlike the Mets winning the World Series. This is Fifth Avenue and Union Street in Park Slope. Think there were some happy people out there?

This really was a great party at 5th and Union last night. It started off quite innocently with a few groups of people cheering on the corner as cars drove by honking and flaming the fire. Then I heard a couple fireworks go off up the block and people started coming out of the woodworks. Things really erupted when an MTA employee started dancing and cheering with everybody from the driver’s seat of her bus!

The NYPD started to trickle in as the chanting grew louder and louder. Eventually they had to block off the whole intersection in all directions until the impromptu tribal mailbox-based drum circle took a break and released the crowd from the Obama vision quest that gripped the corner for the previous hour.

And by the way, the FDNY and NYPD were seriously gracious last night (with the exception of that one ticket they tried to issue to guy who parked amidst the festivities to get a better look).

This was a very special corner that evening. I was one of the folks playing drums on the mailbox. I’m wearing a red hat in the pic above. What a truely special night. I had flown halfway around the world to get here earlier in the day so I could vote! Go Obama… Go Park Slope
