Awful, Depressing Christmas Eve Developments in Coney Island

December 24th, 2008 · 8 Comments

We don’t have the full story of what happened in Coney Island yesterday, except that the we got a phone message from Diana carlin (Lola Staar) that people were being evicted. Meanwhile, photos we being posted on the Coney Island Message Board of “For Lease” signs going up on all the boardwalk businesses. One is tempted to start writing things about Scrooge and the insanity of doing something like this two days before Christmas, but we’ve also seen comments that new leases will be forthcoming. And comments that rents may triple. We will try to get more information and update if we can, but it’s Christmas Eve. (All photos are courtesy of Captain Jonesy on the Coney Island Message Board.) The signs speak for themselves. The question is what is goiing on.

Holy crap! Thor is really in the business of bringing joy to NYC. In the midst of a long-term battle where they have lost the faith of everyone. Middle of a recession. Middle of winter. And on Christmas Eve.

If this is a negotiating tactic, then what do they want to do? Prove to more people their are idiots?

PS: I’ve posted some photos I took of the area back in 1985. Linked to my name in this comment.

Short of dropping a nuke on Coney Island, how much worse are things going to get. It truly sucks, does anybody have a solution.

Do you need someone to draw you a picture in addition to taking them?

Deborah, the only silver lining in this is to hope that somehow the recession and perhaps the Madoff scandal can somehow topple Thor to to ground.

The folks have destroyed beloved icons in EVERY neighborhood they have ever come into.

Sitt truly is a scumbag. I don’t know how he has the nerve to call himself a developer. All he’s ever done in Brooklyn is practice the art of flipping (e.g. Albee Square mall), the very bottom of the real estate barrel and a pretty significant contributing factor to the economic crisis we’re experiencing right now. He contributes nothing to the business but greed.

Is the city going to stand by and let Joe Scrooge get away with destroying Coney Island? yeah, I bet they will. In fact, I’m beginning to agree with my more cynical friends who say the city wants all of the old timers outta there. Out with the old in with the new! In the past when I questioned the eviction of Thor’s tenants, the reply from the CIDC was there’s nothing they can do because it’s between the landlord and tenant! Isn’t it time to consider Eminent Domain against Sitt? The city hasn’t hesitated to use it against ordinary folks in Willett’s Point.

So, something I’ve never been clear about…is the land under Shoot the Freak owned by Thor?
