When we first glanced at this photo in thumbnail form, it struck as an English Village but it is Carroll Gardens. The photographer writes, “This guy is walking down one of my favorite streets in all of NYC – Dennett Place. You see the entire length of it here.”

With all due respect as someone who gew up in England, I can tell you that it looks nothing like an English Village. That said, it is a beautiful block

This is right by where I used to live – I love the hobbit doors for the ground level apts, many only 3-4 ft tall (with steps leading down just inside the door). They filmed one of the early scenes from Spiderman 3 here, which involved bringing in a lot of fake trash, and, for some reason, stringing laundry lines across the street.

The tiny doors on that street fascinate me. Was it all one big “development” at once, and the doors were an after-thought?
It might not look exactly like an English Village, but it’s not really an American urban street by any stretch of the imagination.

Those tiny doors are great – you can see one of them on the left of the picture under the entrance to the first building next to the stop-sign-shaped “window.”
