On Monday, we posted about a new effort in Carroll Gardens to try to find ways to calm traffic and stop accidents. It was spurred by an accident that could have hurt or killed people late last week. A GL reader left a comment that directed us to this photo of the accident at Smith and Sackett Streets. The description says: “That call box prevented the VW from traveling further down the sidewalk. Witnesses said the Black car was flying along, (including through a stop sign) skid marks of the VW seemed to prove this. Apparently the Black SUV was headed down the street the camera is facing. The VW was moving down Smith st, to Frame right.”

This email is being circulated via the BoCoCa Parents group about discussion of the problem at the Community Board 6 meeting:

Many people wrote with excellent suggestions about how to proceed with addressing the problem of dangerous traffic on Smith, following a serious accident last Friday on Smith and Sackett. These included petitioning, contacting the DOT, and various local politicians.

To start, I attended the Community Board Meeting last night and addressed the issue. There were other neighbors there who spoke about safety issues on Smith. A representative from the DOT said that Maria Pagano, the President of the Carroll Gardens Neighborhood Association, should write him a letter requesting a traffic study be conducted to try to upgrade the corner of Smith and Sackett from a stop sign to a signal. In addition, he said that it was very possible to put in speed bumps on Smith Street, particularly near the park and the school.

Looks like there will eventually be some action to slow things down on Smith Street.

I would love to see speed bumps on Smith Street! Where are people in such a hurry to get to, anyway?

This event was related at the CGNA meeting last Monday. A DOT guy was there.
Believe me or not , he suggested traffic studies prior to a decision for traffic lights.
I travel twice a day through Smith ( early morning and mid afternoon ) and slow down down down at Sackett as this cross is so dangerous.
    No need for a study.

Traffic lights will only increase speeds as people try to make the light. Any Brooklyn resident knows exactly what I am talking about. Why not lower the speed limit to a crawl and/or put in speed Humps? The last dissuading factor in speed and accidents like this would be a police force who actually penalized people for dangerous driving.
