“The people will long remember what we have done here today, and the people will be unforgiving. We are stealing like a thief in the night their right to decide the shape of their democracy. We are forgetting who we work for.” Council Member Bill de Blasio, speaking about the effort to extend term limits.

Yes, because arbitrarily taking away ones ability to vote for the candidate of their choice has nothing to do with “stealing like a thief in the night their right to decide the shape of their democracy.”
This is coming from someone who never voted for Bloomberg and has no plans to for his third term.
Bill de Blasio needs a swift kick to the kidneys, I dare say…

randyhate — it wasn’t arbitrary, it was approved by voter referendum years ago. i’m not a huge fan of term limit laws but it seems to me that overturning it should require another voter referendum. why have referendums if they can be easily overturned by the council?

Jeez where was the Councilman when it came to fighting the BSA which is a totally undemocratic body of uber developer bucks/power that has so so so much unrestrained power over the shape of the built environment in NYC but is AGAINST the express wishes of so many thousand of voters?
Guess he was having dinner with the lobbyists that month. Shame.
