This isn’t just any missing dog. This is Key Lime Steve’s missing dog, Mango. Yes, the Key Lime Steve of Steve’s Key Lime Pies.
Went Missing On Saturday, 11-22, 7:00 PM, on the corner of Columbia and Degraw, while innocently waiting a piece of cornbread outside of Jake’s BBQ (corner of Alma, B-61, DUB- Pies & MargretPalka Bakes).Someone, with apparent good-intentions, picked up Mango (hardest working dog in the key lime pie business). We are seeking the return to his rightful master and his place in the pie kingdom. Reward for information leading to the return of our beloved mascot, constant sidekick, canine friend and family member. He is a 10-year old intact male (father of 32), brown on both ears, light-brown “mango” on left side of face. He answers to Mango, Crack-Pipe and Freak-Farm. To verify his identity, just ask him “where’s the rat?” If he doesn’t respond, it ain’t him. Call any of the numbers below. (deleted, contact viaFLICKR-mail), or just drop him off where he was last seen, I’ll meet him at the B-61 bar as has always been the plan, every day for the past 4-years (besides, he never got his cornbread).
Mango does NOT leave that corner, he never has and under any circumstances would not “follow” anyone home. There is a chance that someone picking up food at Jake’s simply threw him into a car and drove off, so if you happen to see someone in your neighborhood walking a seasoned JRT for the first time, please contact me. Again, call his name and he will respond. I just passed a poster for this about twenty minutes ago and can’t believe it. I have met Steve and Mango and I hope they are reunited.

I left a similar message on Park Slope Parents: Please do not leave your dog unattended, dogs have been stolen, used for bait in pit bull rings, and recently held for $ by dognappers (an article in the NY Times over the summer discussed this)> Just leave your dog HOME when you are out doing errands. Take him/her for a walk AFTER you come back from shopping! Once your pet disappears, you may never seeh your friend again! Why take the chance???

How can anyone just leave their dog unattended on a busy street in dangerous NY or any street for that matter? That really pisses me off. There are dangerous people out there that steal dogs. Please people, if you love your pets, don’t leave them unattended!!!

I don’t think one should be paranoid when it comes to pets or loved ones because you really can prepare for stuff like this.
Will say this makes me sad. Mango is an awesome dog and this loss is not a good thing.

For those of you who take umbrage with Mango being unleashed, I offer you the same reply I offered the Post…
“I knew from the way this (Post) story was worded, people would have this kind of reaction, but Mango has lived his life with me every single day, from the time I walked out in the morning until the time I returned home at the end of the day, he has been with me, untethered. While he knows his master and knows his limits, he maintained a degree of autonomy that had allowed him to live more of “a dogs life” in a month than many of yours do in a lifetime.
“After 9+ years, I have had more then a few encounters with you “responsible” dog owners who manage to get their dog out for a quickie before work and a quickie at the end of the day. Just how selfish is it of you “responsible” dog owners to keep your dogs locked up in your apartments or homes all day so that you might be greeted and feel welcomed and loved, or that your dog is “book-ended” with daily walks? I’m sure you’re telling yourselves your dog is happy, who wouldn’t be after being isolated in a virtual cage for 8+ hours?
“Research tells that there are psychological benefits animal companionship can give us, including providing security for the anxious, companionship for the lonely and status symbols for the image conscious. What are the ethical implications that you would cage an animal to ultimately fulfill your own psychological needs? Even Cesar Millan (Dog Whisper) tell us that “”Dogs need to be fulfilled. And the fulfillment is based on exercise, discipline and affection, in that order”. Based on that, I would contend that for Mango’s entire life, it has been a fulfilled life.
“I used to have a sign outside the bakery entrance (before someone stole it) that stated “Dogs and Unruly Humans Should Remain Outside, Preferably on a Leash!” I find it interesting that no one (in the case of the NYPost) has commented on the fact that Mango was stolen, but on the irresponsible actions of his master. I read your comments, but to quote Dan Quayle, “I wear their scorn as a badge of honor’.”

It’s not a busy or dangerous corner, it’s a quiet neighborhood, and that dog’s regular spot. I’ve seen him there many a time, and am really shocked that the ad I saw today while walking my pit was for that familiar guy. I hope he turns up.

I don’t see being stolen anywhere on that list. Also, “responsible” dog owners still own their dogs, and since you do not, maybe you should reserve judgement on us.

Steve, I know how your dog is and I agree with everything you said. My neighbors still crate their dog for over 6 hours a day. It is just , that, it is dark, now, You shouldn’t have left him alone for one second. Also, no offense, but, is putting a flyer up in front of yuppie eurotrash hangout, Bar Tabac a good place to find a dog theif? Put the flyers up in those “other’ neoghborhoods. Remember that dog that was stolen out of that house on Windsor terrace? And ended up sold on Fulton Mall? The girls who bought him didn’t read the paper or see flyers orread Brooklyn blogs. Go to the source. Go to the Red Hook Housing police, put up flyers around the Gowanus Housing. Go to the Bronx..
I’m sorry, I truely am. I just lost my 13 yr old dog who walked without a leash, to kidney failure. I’m so sorry, really. Everyone has an opinion. Good Luck, Steve. Oh, a woman found a dog tied up on Clinton street. Took it home. Found out that the dog had been shopped around to the doggie day cares. Might be worth a flyer or 2 in all the places in the area…I will keep an eye out for your Mango.

I say put some fliers outside of every public project in the Downtown Brooklyn area. Someone grabbed that dog to sell it or use it as bait for dog fights.
“don’t believe it or not”, you’re a moron. Do you actually believe a leash is a form of dog protection? Have you ever seen a pair of scissors or bolt cutters? Anyone who wants to steal a dog doesn’t look at a leash and goes “Drats! Foiled again!”
Heck, I chased a poodle that got loose on Atlantic Avenue a few weeks back because its leash broke.
So please, don’t lecture anyone on pet security. Anyone who thinks a leash would have stopped this has never seen thieves operate.

mango, in my view, is the coolest dog in the universe. In fact, he inspired me to get my own dog from the pound, a big red chow named harry who has a severe crush on mango everytime I bring him to Alma. The first time I saw Mango, he was literally “sitting” at the bar, his paws on the bar, a beer in front of him. Probably not his beer but it coulda been. I would have believed it. that was a few years ago but i always look forward to seeing his fuzzy face – his smart ass personality is dearly admired by his biggest fan, me.
That dog better be ok or I’m coming after them myself.

Mango was the most respected pup of his kingdom, husband to a beautiful sweet Russel, Mammey, a proud papa of 8 litters of puppies, the best friend and guardian of his family , and very easily the most popular mascot of Red Hook, Brooklyn! I work on pier 41, neighbor to Steve’s Authentic Key Lime Pies, and can’t express the forlorn atmosphere there. I tear up thinking how depressed Mango is without his family.
Please if anyone knows anything, call! Please return Mango safely!
