Holy fucking guacamole. GL’s Chief Correspondent E.C. Stephens has made one of the most bizarre food discoveries in Park Slope in recent memory. It’s a little thing, really, dealing with a restaurant that many rank as mediocre. Yet it is truly, truly strange. Remember how Maria’s Mexican Bistro morphed into Mercado Social? That would have been in the glorious days of mid-October. Well, now, it’s morphed back to Maria’s. Talk about having an identity crisis. If this restaurant were a person it would be treated for having a serious personality disorder. WTF? Ms. Stephens writes: “Maria’s has some serious identity issues. Why not put all the money you wasted on changing signs and advertising by adding some beans and rice to your pathetic taco plate! and put out on the free chips and salsa already!” Anybody have any thoughts on this bit ‘o weirdness, other than this has serious doom written all over it?

The Maria’s here in Sunset (yep, same people) was really very good at first. It’s become the familiar mediocre – mainly due to the guacamole being pretty gross a few times – and they’ve raised their prices to rival PS prices. A dangerous move considering the many excellent Mexican places here.

Bring back the new old place! It was starting to be good. They actually had some new friendly staff who cared about your experience there.

Cant comment on the latest name changes, but last time we went on a Saturday night, there were some significant management issues. Host/Hostess couldn’t give an estimate on the wait time, yet there were empty tables waiting to be bussed and set tables waiting to be filled. We ended up leaving after 40 minutes, and left others at the bar who had waited longer.
I want to like this place, but it needs some help.

There is in fact a divorce at play here. The owner Eduardo was found fooling around once the place was closed with a waitress by his wife no less. It’s really ugly.
