Another old Fifth Avenue landmark in Park Slope is about to change. It was a bodega in its most recent incarnation, but before that it was Berkley Clothing and its fascinating retro sign and part of the original facade had survived. No longer. A good friend of GL emails to say: “I noticed today that the old bodega/berkely clothing store on the corner of 16th and 5th ave has a work permit in the window for a restaurant/bar establishment.” And, indeed, DOB records show the building officially known as 197 16th Street or, to us, 568 Fifth Avenue, has permits to become a “drinking and eating establishment. There may be some irony in the fact that it will be across the street from a Fifth Avenue Committee supportive housing development that will house, among other people, those recovering from substance abuse problems.

Why is it ironic that a restaurant is across the street from a rehab place? Food rehab?

I agree with #1…and it’s not like there isn’t Sidecar or Buttermilk already well-entrenched next door. Where was the “irony” when the supportive housing was first announced?

Looks like they will be keeping the old sign? Seems they would have removed the old store front when the scaffolding was still up. Part of Fifth Avenue’s glory days when it was an upscale Sunday shopping destination.

It’s ironic because the Fifth Ave supportive housing development was a controversial issue, and the writer of this blog is desperate for comments and decided to link that to this new restaurant opening in the hopes that it generates traffic.
Notice that the only post to gain over 10 comments on this blog was the one about the Park Slope food co-op non ban.
Speaking of banning, I’m sure this comment will be, just like most of the others.

I used the word “irony” because this is listed as a “drinking and eating” establishment and not an “eating and drinking” one. This indicates bar. Yes, there are bars around already. But this is one that will be opening in the future and some of the residents of the supportive housing will be recovering alcoholics or drug addicts. Yes, I find irony in this. I realize they are surrounded by alcohol, anyway. But a new bar right across the street IMHO can be construed as ironic. And no, this wasn’t posted to get comments. I could not care less if a post gets zero comments, five, ten, fifteen or twenty. This was a post about a new bar on Fifth Ave. I chose to inject my opinion about a post-rehab housing developement and future bar being across the street from each other as ironic. There are people in the rehab field who might refer to it as one more “challenge” people in recovery have to face. If it’s primarily a restaurant, then my bad.

It’s going to be an English themed pub that will show sporting events like soccer. I went in the other day and spoke to the construction guy.
