Gowanus Lounge: Serving Brooklyn

The Williamsburg Anti-Development Poster Collection

Bring Back the Old Hood

If you’ve wandered around Williamsburg during the last week or so, you’ve noticed some “Condoburg” graffiti here and there. This week, some posters with a humorous anti-development theme have been added. Most of those here are on Bayard Street on the fencing around the Ikon development on the strip we named Karl Fischer Row. The “Condoburg” message at the bottom is behind 55 Berry on N. 11th Street.

That’s exactly what Willimsburg looked like in 1991. Thanks for reminding us, you who settled the wilds of Brooklyn in 1991!

Great posters. But to the commentator who left the message about “settling the wilds of Brooklyn” I hope this is meant to be ironic. Let’s not forget that people besides artists from middle class backgrounds lived there before 1991. The whole pioneer spiel is tired and misplaced.
