Bklink: Brooklyn Cultural Institution Scandals

You probably remember the “Sensation” show furor at the Brooklyn Museum in 1999. But what about Stanford White, the prominent architect who designed the “The Palm House” and other structures at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. He was shot by his wife because he had an underage lover. Ring a bell?–Icky in Brooklyn

Oops…Stanford White was, of course, shot by the husband of his mistress, Evelyn Nesbit, not his own wife. Harry K. Thaw was tried in the first “trial of the century,” almost 90 years before O.J., and essentially beat the rap with an insanity defense. The whole scandalous affair was news again recently when a building collapsed on W. 24th Street in Manhattan; it had been the site of White’s love nest.
