On the heels of the zoning text amendment’s passage and a Stop Work Order from the Department of Buildings at 360 Smith Street, the planned closing of an entrance to the Carroll Street subway station has been put on hold. Per an email from the MTA:

The MTA NYC Transit has been informed by Mr. William Stein, the developer of 360 Smith Street (a.k.a. 131 2nd Place) that his construction project will not necessitate the closure of the Carroll Street F G station entrance/exit at 2nd Place and Smith Street on Monday, July 28 as originally anticipated. Therefore, NYC Transit will be keeping this staircase open until further notice.

It’s surrounded by a construction wall now, but it is open.

Hey what about getting our plaza back? There is no place to wait for the trains anymore! And what about the newsstand guy? He looked pretty shocked when he was thrown out of there recently. I don’t think he knew what day he was going to be closing. Now he has closed his business prematurely, no?
