Park Slope Retail Report: Oak is Toast

August 18th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Hip chainlet Oak may be doing okay on Bond Street in Manhattan and in Williamsburg but they are doneski on Fifth Avenue in Park Slope. Per a GL Correspondent, the store at President Street, which switched over to accessories mode earlier this year is no longer. Whether this says more about Oak or about Park Slope, we don’t know, but it was a pretty short experiment.

No matter how cheap your rent is… DO NOT OPEN YOUR STORE ON A SIDE STREET. This rule applies to restaurants too… yes I’m thinking of you, underpatronised deli the other side of Fifth on President.

Oak was incredibly overpriced. Plus, that weird, naive-art sign painted on the side of the building couldn’t have helped matters. I always wondered why they had that weird sign when the lettering on the store itself was quite nice.
