By most accounts (and photos), the first Summer Space event on Montague Street was thinly attended. It did happen over the July 4 weekend on a fairly unpleasant day, which probably accounts for some of the small crowd. The sponsors are trying to spin the event–which we actually think is a great idea–as a success. […]

The weekly (for summer) Montague Street pedestrian plaza experiment debuted yesterday and at 3PM the crowds were…well, there wasn’t a crowd. There was a fairly empty street. Maybe it was the weather or that it was July 4 weekend or already late in the afternoon.–Brooklyn Heights Blog

In the Pool: Late Sunset from the Promenade
June 29th, 2008 · 1 Comment
[Photo courtesy of Karyn Bosnak/GL Flickr Pool] This gorgeous shot is a tail end of a sunset a few days ago as seen from the Brooklyn Promenade. We love the colors, the semi-demolished warehouse in Brooklyn Bridge Park in the foreground and the way that other borough whose name starts with an “M” looks. It […]

June 26th, 2008 · Comments Off on Bklink: Fireproof
Like “unsinkable,” fireproof is likely a word that should be used with trepidation. So it was with the St. George Hotel, once a fine hotel in Brooklyn Heights, that back at the turn of the century was said to be “absolutely fire-proof.” Of course, in 1995, the St. George suffered one of the bigger blazes […]

The beloved lobster sign of Armando’s Restaurant on Montague Street only came down last week, but the new sign for the Spicy Pickle chain restaurant is already up. “The new sign appears to be the same size, shape and dimension of the old Lobster with a bolder color scheme.”–Brooklyn Heights Blog

[Image courtesy of heyheyamy/flickr] The Brooklyn waterfront where Brooklyn Bridge Park is intended to rise is changing very, very rapidly. This photo was dropped into the Gowanus Lounge Photo pool by heyheyamy and shows the site from the Brooklyn Bridge. Upcoming: “The Selling of Brooklyn Bridge Park”
May 22nd, 2008 · Comments Off on Upcoming: “The Selling of Brooklyn Bridge Park”
Rather than being universally embraced, Brooklyn Bridge Park has sparked deep controversy in some quarters in Brooklyn, primarily because high rise condo development will be used to finance the park. The Sierra Club, which opposes the way the park is being developed, is sponsoring a presentation called “The Selling of Brooklyn Bridge Park” on Friday, […]

“A few weeks ago I noticed that Microsoft made an interesting move and opened up Microsoft Live Picture Studio on Montague Street in Brooklyn Heights. At first I did a double-take thinking, ‘Could they really have opened up a picture studio?’ What a waste.” So, few people seemed to go in to this Mother’s Day-related […]

Our Carroll Gardens Correspondent came across this flier for poor, little lost Bologny, who has flown the coop, so to speak and may be hiding out somewhere in Brooklyn Heights. Bologny is blue and white and can fly high and fast but is also said to be very tame. We’re not sure how one locates […]

The Bossert on Montague Street in Brooklyn Heights, which Watchtower had put on the market, has apparently sold for more than $100 million. This is not shocking, given the location and the building’s potential to come back as a super luxury residence.–Brownstoner

For the record, we like the the Peas and Pickles on Henry Street. Their fruit and vegetables are usually fresh and the staff are pretty nice. Usually their prices, like most bodegas in the city, are a little higher than the average supermarket. However, since the fire that shut down the Henry Street Gristedes next […]

There was a dramatically smoky fire at the Gristede’s in Brooklyn Heights last night. The blaze apparently started ivia an electrical malfunction near the deli section, perhaps in a unit that keeps bakery products warm. Excellent photos at Brooklyn Heights Blog, which wonders about the toll on “the vermin population” and at McBrooklyn.
