Then, consider doing some holiday shopping at the Brooklyn Indie Market on Smith Street on Saturday and Sunday (12/15 and 12/16). The designers will be donating up to 15 percent of their receipts to benefit at-risk families […]

Carroll Gardens Democracy Wall in Danger?
December 10th, 2007 · 1 Comment
Is the Carroll Gardens Democracy Wall where residents have been posting murals and news articles about development news in their community in danger? It could be. There’s a sense among residents that both the police and local politicians may try to put an end to what has become a community fixture over the last six […]

Garage Door Reveals "Carroll Gardens Secret"
December 9th, 2007 · Comments Off on Garage Door Reveals "Carroll Gardens Secret"
Here’s a bit of Carroll Gardens serendipity from a special correspondent with a good eye who’s been showering us with neighborhood goodness. In sending this photo to the GL Inbox in an email with the subject line “CG Secret,” our correspondent simply wrote: “’49 Caddy, Carroll Gardens, President Street.” Note the dust on the car, […]

Mixed Message: Walk or Don’t Walk
December 8th, 2007 · Comments Off on Mixed Message: Walk or Don’t Walk
The GL reader who emailed us this shot correctly identified our love of odds street signs, if not mixed messages. He writes: This one was taken on smith @ president (by the Gowanus Yacht Club.) Sounds like the DOT does not take any responsibility…you can cross the street at your own risk. Well, one should […]

The Carroll Gardens CORD group, which has been pushing for a development moratorium and fast action on rezoning has sent out another letter to elected officials. It says in part: “Who is watching out for our safety? Who is protecting our property? Why does it seem as though the developer’s rights and interests are put […]

A Lot of Digging & Shaking at 340 Court in Carroll Gardens
December 6th, 2007 · 12 Comments
What is going on at 340 Court Street? Well, the photo, which was shot yesterday afternoon by a special GL Correpondent shows that a big dig is underway in the back of the former medical building that is going to be demolished. We also know that complaints have been filed with the Department of Buildings […]

Carroll Gardens Shot-Up Car is Gone, Baby, Gone
December 6th, 2007 · Comments Off on Carroll Gardens Shot-Up Car is Gone, Baby, Gone
That shot-up car with the busted out back window and blood stained interior that had sat in a bus stop at Union and Henry Streets for nearly two weeks is gone. The story of the car had made the Sun yesterday, with credit to Curbed, where we first posted it, and NY1 (which is heavily […]

Shot Up Carroll Gardens Car Update
December 5th, 2007 · Comments Off on Shot Up Carroll Gardens Car Update
The shot-up car parked at a Carroll Gardens bus stop that we posted about on both Curbed and on GL yesterday is explored further in today’s Sun, which says it “appears to have slipped through the cracks” of the police evidence storage system. It’s supposed to be gone by tonight.

Old & New: Friends or Frenemies on Union Street?
December 4th, 2007 · 12 Comments
These buildings are neighbors. The two photos were sent to us by the same very special GL correspondent who provided yesterday’s tale of the Carniceria sign on Smith Street. Our correspondent writes: Picture one [left] is of very nice, renovated brownstone with, not-quite-original- but-it’ll-do, iron shutters. On Union Street in Carroll Gardens. This lovely thing […]

Carroll Gardens Democracy Wall Gets New Mural
December 1st, 2007 · Comments Off on Carroll Gardens Democracy Wall Gets New Mural
We enjoy the Carroll Gardens Democracy Wall at the Carroll Street subway station. It is part of the now well-known plaza at the Second Place exit that will be closed for construction of the controversial building at 360 Smith Street, which led to both the wall and the CORD neighborhood group. Dozens of message appear […]

Demolition Crews Get Going at 340 Court
November 21st, 2007 · 1 Comment
It’s unclear what’s going to end up being built at 340 Court Street with the developers, the Clarett Group, saying that they’ll be putting up a six or seven story building and residents still afraid of a 21-story tower (which is theoretically okay under current zoning). What’s more certain is that the demolition crews got […]

Burden to Carroll Gardens: Rezoning Will Take a While
November 16th, 2007 · 1 Comment
It doesn’t seem to us that anything has changed dramatically, but Planning Commissioner Amanda Burden recently noted in a letter to Borough President Marty Markowitz that there will be a fairly long time line for rezoning Carroll Gardens (as per significant local sentiment) and that she can’t “commit to a precise timeframe.” She writes, in […]
