[Photo courtesy of Miss Heather] This comes from S. 5 Street on the Southside of Williamsburg and whether the sign has the proper DOT permit or not, we think we’d skip parking here.

Signs Under Siege: Mixed Signals
January 23rd, 2009 · Comments Off on Signs Under Siege: Mixed Signals
[Photo courtesy of Miss Heather] This is from George Street in Bushwick. Because of the way the sign is pointing and the Cathedral of Joy Church of God sort of juxtaposed like that Miss Heather has titled this baby “Highway to Hell.”

As long as you can read the reg upside down and a little curved, you’ll be fine. This comes from Williamsburg, naturally.

We never knew that closing sidewalks in Wiliamsburg was Republican propaganda until we came across this sign on Union Avenue. Now we know.

Signs Under Siege: Bashed Down Bus Stop on Flatbush Ave.
October 29th, 2008 · 1 Comment
We found this bus stop sign, that had clearly had an unpleasant encounter with an automobile, on Flatbush Avenue. What we can say is: we didn’t notice anyone even giving it a second look.

Signs Under Siege: Don’t Park During Sextime!!!
October 20th, 2008 · Comments Off on Signs Under Siege: Don’t Park During Sextime!!!
You get two guesses as to which neighborhood in which we found this newly-altered sign. If you guessed that it ends in …burg, you’re right! And, why not, it’s the Sex Capital of Brooklyn. Sadly, it wasn’t across the street from Union Pool, but it was within a couple of blocks, making it extra meaningful. […]

[Photo courtesy of The Loopweaver/GL Flickr Pool] This interestingly altered sign comes to us from Park Slope. The photographer writes: “Another sign altered by the clever placement of a sticker…This one says we should keep our eyes peeled for pedestrians with TV’s for heads. “

Signs Under Seige: A Little Confused

Uh, we know which way they should go, but these signs at N. 7 and Wythe in Williamsburg might leave a driver or two who was looking at which way the cars are parked scratching his or her head.

Say What–Mowed Down
August 7th, 2008 · Comments Off on Say What–Mowed Down
We don’t know what happened to the signs at the corner of N. 9 Street and Wythe Avenue in Williamsburg, but it does seem like it was violent. We are guessing they are victims of a vehicular homicide.

[Photo courtesy of threecee/GL Flickr Pool] This amusing image from the Vanderbilt Yards (aka Atlantic Yards site) comes to us courtesy of Tracy Collins via our GL Flickr Pool. Whatever you do, do not park in this spot. For many reasons, all of them having nothing to do with the fallen sign.

[Photo courtesy of Miss Heather] Here’s an interesting addition to a sign at Bedford Avenue and N. 5 Street in Williamsburg that Miss Heather captured recently. We have no idea how they got there or why, but they’re certainly interesting.

Say What–Needs Replacement
June 28th, 2008 · Comments Off on Say What–Needs Replacement
There are many alternate side parking signs being replaced in Park Slope. So many, in fact, that alternate side rules have been famously suspended until further notice, leading to complaints by some residents that it’s harder to park and that the streets are dirtier. We haven’t noticed either to particularly be the case, but we […]

[Photo courtesy of Miss Heather] There are still some googly eyes here and there in Williamsburg from a bunch that were pasted everywhere a couple of years ago. This pair, for instance, survives on a “No Entry” sign at McCarren Pool.

Say What–Alternate Side Guessing Game
June 18th, 2008 · Comments Off on Say What–Alternate Side Guessing Game
No, this sign isn’t from Park Slope, site of this summer’s Alternate Side Parking Follies (where some people say the temporary suspension of alternate side parking has made parking harder and some say it’s made no difference whatsoever). It’s from Williamsburg, where a bunch of signs on the South Side have been altered, perhaps to […]

Say What–Watch the Bike
June 3rd, 2008 · Comments Off on Say What–Watch the Bike
This pedestrian crossing sign in Gowanus at Union and Bond Streets has been leaning more and more and more. Yesterday, it seemed to be warning pedestrians of the bike that a child had momentarily left at the crosswalk.

Talk about signs that get screwed up when construction happens, this former One Way sign that has become a “Way” sign on Wythe Avenue in Williamsburg is deserving of a DOT Award for Creative Altered Signage. Serious kudos to the contractors for the excellent work.

Say What: Brookspring Edition
May 12th, 2008 · Comments Off on Say What: Brookspring Edition
This is one of our favorite “Say What” photos yet, as it combines the beauty of spring with an obstructed street sign. This sign in Cobble Hill is also tagged up, but what makes it perfect are the beautiful crataegus flowers. The kind of flowers they are is not something we know, but what we […]

This specimen comes from Diamond Street in Greenpoint, which Miss Heather, who sent us the photo, points out may be NYC’s most smoking neighborhood. So, it’s no surprise that this sign on Diamond Street carries a sort of pro-smoking message.

Say What–Another Construction Victim
April 22nd, 2008 · Comments Off on Say What–Another Construction Victim
Our innate powers of observation tell us that this parking sign, which we found on Bedford Avenue, was clearly a victim of construction. Further analysis seems to show that it was felled by some sort of street work rather than building development. Nonetheless, it is down for the count.
