This amusing example of a one way sign gone bad–or, at least, pointing in a direction which it was not intended to point–comes from Fayette Street and Broadway on the edge of Bushwick or of Bed-Stuy, depending. It is courtesy of our Greenpoint Correspondent.

Say What–Alternate Side of the Street Flowers
January 17th, 2008 · Comments Off on Say What–Alternate Side of the Street Flowers
This nicely decorated alternate side sign, which has had plastic roses for a long time, comes from Manhattan Avenue east of the BQE in Williamsburg. The sign actually marks the route as St. Padre Pio Way.

Say What–Adel Street

Construction claims another sign. Look closely and you will see that Beadel Street and Kingland Avenue has become “Adel” Street & Kingland, with the “Be” being eaten by scaffolding. The pic of Adel Street comes courtesy of our Greenpoint Correspondent.

Say What–Gorgeous One Way

[Photo courtesy of Mirabelle Studios] We don’t know exactly where photographer, sculptor and artist Gary Mirabelle shot this bent up one-way sign, although we believe it to be in the Windsor Terrace area. What we do know is that it’s the most gorgeous “Say What” shot we’ve ever run.

Say What — Relocated Bike Lane
January 9th, 2008 · Comments Off on Say What — Relocated Bike Lane
We found this bike lane sign on N. 4 Street in Williamsburg, a significant distance from the bike lane to which it might have referred, which is on Berry Street. Interesting how it traveled about a half block after being felled.

From Roebling Street in Williamsburg comes one of Brooklyn’s many, many violated alternate side parking signs. Oops.

Say What–Curvy One Way Sign

Our Greenpoint correspondent found and submitted this exceptional specimen, which comes from Roebling Street in the center of compromised signs, Williamsburg. Doesn’t look like a turning truck did violence to this one, does it? Update: The sign is the work of artist Brad Downey, who has installed some very cool things around Brooklyn and Queens.

Say What–Which Way?
December 15th, 2007 · Comments Off on Say What–Which Way?
Of course, it’s not that hard to tell which way is one way at Newell Street and Meserole Avenue in Greenpoint, as long as you look at the parked cars and the direction of the traffic. The signs, well, those might get you turned around a bit. This contribution comes from our inimitable Greenpoint Correspondent, […]

Say What: Artsy Stop Sign Edition
December 11th, 2007 · 1 Comment
We’ve featured this sign before. It was relocated as part of the process of building the condos called 125 N. 10 at the corner of N. 10th and Berry. We feature it again because it’s gotten a bit tagged up since we last looked.

Say What–Sprinklered Again

We don’t focus much on altered signs on private property, but some of them are too hard to pass up. Like this sprinkler sign on a desolate street on the Williamsburg-Greenpoint border. Nice.

Say What–Fishy Sprinkler Edition

This sign, which isn’t a street sign at all, but a building sign, caught our eyes in Greenpoint. The fish and the water theme work well together.

Say What–On Hands and Knees Edition
November 20th, 2007 · Comments Off on Say What–On Hands and Knees Edition
One suspects and entire daily series of damaged bus signs–especially ones like this–if readers were to start sending them. This is a B71 schedule. It hasn’t been tagged, so as long as one is willing to get on hands and knees, the schedule is still there for the reading. It comes from Union Street in […]

Say What–Stop Sign Down
November 19th, 2007 · 1 Comment
We love a fallen stop sign because they’re always a sign that life could become more random and edgy. This one is from Red Hook at an intersection with Beard Street where, fortunately, there isn’t much traffic for which to stop. We believe the sign went back up after the construction work on the corner […]

Say What–Come to a Hanging Stop
November 14th, 2007 · Comments Off on Say What–Come to a Hanging Stop
This sign is a construction victim. First, it was lowered in order to accommodate the scaffolding at 125 N. 10 in Williamsburg. And, now, it’s just sort of hanging there.

Say What–Alternate Side Construction Victim
November 6th, 2007 · Comments Off on Say What–Alternate Side Construction Victim
This alternate side of the street parking sign in Williamsburg appears to be the victim of some work on the sidewalk and curb. We like the way it was cleanly amputated in order to get it out of the way.

Say What–Totally Gone

The original meaning of this sign was obliterated by the elements and people a long time ago. We think it had something to do with cleaning up after one’s dog. It comes from Williamsburg.

Say What–Manhattan or Bedford?
November 3rd, 2007 · Comments Off on Say What–Manhattan or Bedford?
This comes from our sharp-eyed and always-observant Greenpoint correspondent, who is always generous in sharing some of the North Brooklyn wealth with GL readers. This clearly comes to from Manhattan and Bedford Avenue, though whether it’s from Manhattan or Bedford is anyone’s guess.

Say What–Fallen Sign
November 2nd, 2007 · Comments Off on Say What–Fallen Sign
Pity the poor alternate side of the street parking sign (well, pity the people that have to move their cars, but that’s another story). It may well be the most abused, defaced and destroyed sign in all of Brooklyn, perhaps simply because there are so many of them. This specimen is from Roebling Street in […]

If there is a sign in Brooklyn that is a magnet for stickers, this is it. It’s located on Bedford Avenue between N. 3rd and N. 4th Street which could help explain its popularity.

Say What–Brooklyn Bus Edition

It’s not the most dramatically damaged sign we’ve ever seen. Not even the most tagged up bus sign we’ve seen in Brooklyn. Nonetheless, this is the first one we’ve seen sitting on the sidewalk. We found it on Lorimer Street, not far from McCarren Pool and Park.

Say What–The End, More or Less
October 23rd, 2007 · Comments Off on Say What–The End, More or Less
This rather tagged up “End” sign appears at the end of N. 3rd Street in Williamsburg, where it ends at the East River next to the Austin Nichols Warehouse, aka 184 Kent. We’ve always had a soft spot for “End” signs that mark what is most clearly the end. This sign is one of the […]
