This recently altered (again) sign comes to us from a New York City Transit facility on N. 6th Street. We think it originally said something about No Parking.

Say What–Beg Your Pardon
October 16th, 2007 · Comments Off on Say What–Beg Your Pardon
We think we know what this sign says, but that’s only because we’ve seen less altered specimens. We believe it has something to do with clean up after one’s dog. The sign comes from Williamsburg. Of course.

Say What–Seriously Stickered
October 13th, 2007 · Comments Off on Say What–Seriously Stickered
We love a sign that has been stickered up, especially those Williamsburg signs that have been stickered over the course of many years. It goes without saying that today’s messed up sign is a Williamsburg one.

Say What: Political Stop sign Ahead
October 12th, 2007 · Comments Off on Say What: Political Stop sign Ahead
This “Stop Sign Ahead” sign in Williamsburg was rendered political recently. We’re putting it up today in honor of Al Gore’s Nobel Peace Price. Sure, somebody should have written “Global Warming” instead of “War,” but it’s thematically on target.

Hanging No More: Stop Sign Fixed, Scaffold Collapse Candidate Not So Much
October 11th, 2007 · Comments Off on Hanging No More: Stop Sign Fixed, Scaffold Collapse Candidate Not So Much
The system works in one tiny case. Or, at least, the laws of coincidence do. We featured this “Hanging Stop Sign” at N. 9th and Wythe a couple of weeks ago. When we swung past the other day, we found it had been dutifully repaired, even if it’s a little low. No such luck with […]

Say What–Alternate Side of the Street Stickers
October 10th, 2007 · Comments Off on Say What–Alternate Side of the Street Stickers
We photographed and posted this Alternate Side of the Street Parking sign in Williamsburg both because of the profusion of stickers that it shows and because it shows many different layers of activity over time.

Say What: One Way Up
October 5th, 2007 · Comments Off on Say What: One Way Up
These signs are the apparent victims of the development site at 99 Havemeyer (at the corner of Hope Street), where the building that can be seen on the scaffolding will rise. Someone’s been doing very good work.

Say What: Eh?
October 4th, 2007 · Comments Off on Say What: Eh?
Upon careful consideration, we believe that it once said “No Mopeds” although it could arguably be currently said to say “No Mo.” The sign appears at an entrance to the Williamsburg Bridge on the Brooklyn side, which helped greatly in interpreting it.

Say What–Brand New at N. 8th and Roebling
October 3rd, 2007 · 1 Comment
This construction-related specimen comes from the Karl Fischer building going up at 63 Roebling, which is the corner of N. 8th and Roebling in Williamsburg. The scaffolding just went up in the last week, resulting in the semi-hidden Stop Sign. It will make life at yet another Williamsburg intersection just a tad more interesting for […]

We especially like the way signs on private property are sometimes decimated, like this Williamsburg specimen that says “NO P…” Etc.

September 28th, 2007 · Comments Off on Say What: Gold Medal Award Winner
Let’s just say this wasn’t like this a couple of weeks ago. The photo was emailed to us by Williamsburg blogger INSIJS and is of the corner of Wythe Avenue and N. 6th Street where the old National Sawdust building is being demolished. He emails: That’s a “stop ahead” sign almost entirely engulfed in the […]

We return to 70 N. 9th Street in Williamsburg, site of our Scaffold Collapse Candidate, for this image, of a stop sign hanging from a splintering piece of the sidewalk structure.

Say What: Don’t Walk Edition
September 18th, 2007 · Comments Off on Say What: Don’t Walk Edition
Okay, so it’s not signage, per se. Nonetheless, this walk/don’t walk signal that we found hanging at Kent Avenue and Metropolitan was certainly deeply compromised. Must have been quite the bad turn by a truck that caused it, although it certainly looks like they were unscrewed.

Say What: Clean Up
September 17th, 2007 · Comments Off on Say What: Clean Up
These “It’s the Law, Clean Up…” signs, which are quite old, provide endless material for photos of really messed up street signage. On some, like this Williamsburg specimen, you can actually see layers of tags and stickers from over the years.

Say What: Subtle Edition
September 15th, 2007 · Comments Off on Say What: Subtle Edition
Today’s street signage isn’t so much compromised as it is a touch ironic, depending on how one views tall buildings in Williamsburg and their architecture. The building in the background is the Toll Brothers Northside Piers. It is one of our least favorite highrises in Brooklyn, primarily because we find the architecture really bad. We’re […]

Say What: Noo Parking Edition
September 14th, 2007 · Comments Off on Say What: Noo Parking Edition
This altered sign is from–of course–Williamsburg, the kingdom of messed up signs. We like it because of the subtle alternation that has taken place and believe that signs should sometimes say “Noo Parking” instead of simply “No Parking.”

Say What: Bogart Gets Bent Edition
September 13th, 2007 · Comments Off on Say What: Bogart Gets Bent Edition
These photos of battered signage in Bushwick/East Williamsburg come from our Greenpoint correspondent, who notes that “It would appear that someone has a ‘thing’ for Bogart Street.” Given the way these signs are bent (especially the one in the top pic), it looks like a deliberate act of Sign Abuse rather than an accident via […]

September 12th, 2007 · Comments Off on Say What: Fishy Dismount Edition
We bring you this sign with the fish sticker, not because it’s unbelievably messed up, but because it comes to us from the shores of the Gowanus Canal. The sign–which we’ve never personally seen anyone obey, although we’re sure that some do, is at the Third Street Bridge over the Gowanus Canal.

We continue our feature of signage that’s been altered, obliterated and otherwise compromised with this No Parking sign from Williamsburg. Why? Because we like the fish stickers.

Yes, it comes from Williamsburg. No, it’s not the most tagged up sign we’ve ever seen, but we think it’s rather nicely stickered, hence our decision to include it here.

[“Dead End” courtesy of I’mjustsayin/flickr]Who knows how this Dead End sign on Kent Avenue, poignantly backed by a Stop sign, was undone. Truck. Construction. Vandalism. Say What: Pol Yr Dog
August 27th, 2007 · Comments Off on Say What: Pol Yr Dog
It actually says “Police Your Dog,” which would have earned it a place here even if it hadn’t be tagged and stickered. We can’t recall the last time we saw a “Police Your Dog” sign, which conjurs up visions of flashing at badge at Fido and ordering him in a very stern and convincing tone […]
