Say What: Curb Your O

August 23rd, 2007 · 1 Comment

This specimen is one of the seriously stickered and tagged signs along Kent Avenue in Williamsburg. What’s particularly interesting about this one, though, is that it’s attached to the fence outside Radiac, which is best known for storing hazardous and low-level radioactive waste. In the scheme of things, what’s a little doggy poo?

Say What: Bent Out of Shape Edition

August 20th, 2007 · 2 Comments

Okay, so this isn’t the most trashed bit of signage we’ve posted, but we like that people have taken the trouble climb all the way up there to bend these signs out of shape. The location? Well, that’s obvious from the Williamsburg street signage.

This is, perhaps, the best example of compromised signage we have ever seen. And if it isn’t, it’s probably the funniest. It comes from Greenpoint, from Green and Franklin Streets, courtesy of our Greenpoint correspondent. Quack.

Say What: No Parking, Peace

August 8th, 2007 · Comments Off on Say What: No Parking, Peace

This sign was attacked and altered a long, long time ago. It resides on a fence in front of some New York City Transit property on N. 6th Street in Williamsburg. It’s got a certain something having to do with the many layers of destruction represented.

Say What: Stop & One-Way on High

July 31st, 2007 · 1 Comment

We return to our ongoing series of compromised Brooklyn signage with this example of signs that have been relocated to accommodate buildings construction. We continue to assume that this is a totally legitimate thing because it happens so frequently, but we might suggest to the city that stop signs that are several feet higher than […]

Say What: Greenpoint Traveling Stop Sign Edition

July 23rd, 2007 · Comments Off on Say What: Greenpoint Traveling Stop Sign Edition

Sure, it’s only a Stop Sign, but we’ve been following its trials and tribulations thanks to our Greenpoint correspondent and today we can report that it’s on the move (again). She writes: Friday it was located on the sidewalk at 159 Green Street. Yesterday it had managed to cross the street (148 Green Street). Today […]

Gone Again: Greenpoint’s Little Stop Sign That Can’t

July 21st, 2007 · Comments Off on Gone Again: Greenpoint’s Little Stop Sign That Can’t

Remember that stop sign that was cut down by a traffic accident at the intersection of Green Street and Manhattan Avenue in Greenpoint, which has been rendered dangerous by construction? Well, it was put back up after it was cut down. And, our Greenpoint correspondent, who sent in the above image, notes that it didn’t […]

Say What: Violated Stop Sign Edition

July 19th, 2007 · Comments Off on Say What: Violated Stop Sign Edition

Our Greenpoint correspondent sent this image of the signage at Green Street and Manhattan Avenue, noting that a truck had mowed down on of the local stop signs at an intersection that construction has rendered treacherous for both motor vehicle, pedestrian and bicyclist. In any case, you’ll note one sign is way up there. The […]

We return to our “Say What?” feature of signs compromised by construction, vandalism or street art, with this example from Williamsburg, which is a Nirvana of screwed up signage. Based on the sign’s placement, we believe it advises one not to park in the driveway.

Say What?: Clean Up After Your Dog Edition

June 19th, 2007 · Comments Off on Say What?: Clean Up After Your Dog Edition

We return to our “Say What?” series of signage compromised by vandalism, street art or construction with this sign in Williamsburg. Yes, it has probably been this way for a decade and, yes, we are trespassing on the turf so clearly dominated by the indefatigable Dog Shit Queen of Greenpoint. But we still like it.

We return again on this Sunday to our Say What feature on signage that has been compromised by construction, tagging or vandalism. Say What?: Roebling Oil Field Edition

June 7th, 2007 · 2 Comments

We were sniffing for oil…well, actually we were taking note of how quickly the building we call the Roebling Oil Field is rising at N. 11th Street and Roebling in Williamsburg. Then, we looked up and saw that they’d decapitated a stop sign and turned it into another one of those that more suited to […]

Which way? One way? Nah. Just, way. This example of construction-related diminished signage is brought to us by the development tentatively known as Seven Berry, at N. 7th and Berry, in Williamsburg. If you’ve been by the corner lately, you know it for its pink wallboard surrounded by blue netting because its been in that […]

Say What?: Signs Under Siege, Greenpoint Edition

May 15th, 2007 · Comments Off on Say What?: Signs Under Siege, Greenpoint Edition

Yesterday, Greenpoint’s Miss Heather hit us off with a couple of photos of signs in Greenpoint that had come out on the losing end of battles with construction and scaffolding. This brought to mind a new feature that we’ll be doing from time to time called “Say What?” featuring signs that have in some way, […]
