Development Notebook: Another One on Keap Street

July 28th, 2008 · Comments Off on Development Notebook: Another One on Keap Street

This is 462 Keap Street which is rising next to a huge Karl Fischer going up on Union Avenue in Williamsburg. It comes from Thomas Gilman, who has gotten some attention recently for the glass tower he has designed that will rise near Prospect Park. The new Gilman will be a six-story building with 29 […]

Brooklyn Nibbles: Williamsburger Now “Beefing Up Hipsters”

July 28th, 2008 · Comments Off on Brooklyn Nibbles: Williamsburger Now “Beefing Up Hipsters”

The new Williamsburger on Wythe Avenue in the Burg opened on Friday night and its menu says it’s “Beefing Up Hipsters.” There’s a straightforward burger menu with cheese choices including white cheddar, Maytag blue, gruyere Swiss and “government.” There was also a Yellow Fin Tuna special on the menu we saw. Some hot dogs and […]

The Ikea Effect: B61 Drivers Taping Schedules to the Wheel?

July 28th, 2008 · 4 Comments

We came across this tidbit about how the MTA is now taking B61 service issues more seriously because of Ikea in the course of an entirely different email discussion on the Brooklyn Baby Hui (Williamsburg parent) group about petitioning the MTA to make buses more stroller friendly. Here’s the bit about the reviled B61 we […]

In Williamsburg, a Finger Building Call to Arms

July 26th, 2008 · 1 Comment

There’s a public hearing on the appeal of the Board of Standards and Appeals decision allowing the Finger Building in Williamsburg to continue. (The Finger Building, on might recall, has been stalled at ten stories for nearly two years, with an ugly dispute taking place about whether it has been built illegally or might actually […]

Brooklyn Flora: Williamsburg Sunflowers

July 25th, 2008 · 1 Comment

This is a sunflower growing on N. 11 Street near Berry in Williamsburg, which is not a particularly verdant swath of Brooklyn. We particularly like the way the color of the sunflower blends with the construction equipment in the background.

July 25th, 2008 · Comments Off on GL Photo Du Jour: Tinkering with the Deathmobile

This is one of Williamsburg’s two well known hearses belonging to the heavy metal club Duff’s which is adjacent to 184 Kent. It’s not every day one catches a photo of someone getting under the hood of the Deathmobile and tinkering with it.

Bklink: Stupid Zoning

July 24th, 2008 · 1 Comment

“The new project at 324 Bedford Avenue epitomizes the stupidity of off-street parking requirements. The building sits at the corner of Bedford and South 2nd. It is designed by Bob Scarano, and is slowly inching its way toward completion (a stop-work order was issued in March, 2007 and the permits have all been revoked). Architecturally, […]

Williamsburg’s Grand Ferry Park is Back

July 24th, 2008 · Comments Off on Williamsburg’s Grand Ferry Park is Back

Grand Ferry Park closed for a remake in October and, while the reopening was a few months later than promised, the redone park–which provides a bit of waterfront access in a part of Williamsburg where none currently exists–is open again and looking good. There is a lot of new landscaping and the park, overall, has […]

Williamsburg Welcome Wagon is Back for Summer

July 22nd, 2008 · 1 Comment

The “Fuck Condoburg” crew is back at it again in Williamsburg after a bit of a hiatus and 80 Metropolitan is once again a favorite canvas for the welcome, pro-gentrification message. While many sites have gotten the Condoburg treatment over time, the 80 Met site has been hit repeatedly with messages of love.

On the Sofa, Daily Edition

July 22nd, 2008 · Comments Off on On the Sofa, Daily Edition

“The management of N. 11th has been very responsive anytime we (as neighbors) have had a complaint. All you have to do is call them and talk to them (I know, a novel idea). When neighbors of ours complained about the tiny styrofoam the offered to come over and clean it up. When another person […]

Giglio Dance #1: The Unique Beauty of the Lift

July 21st, 2008 · 1 Comment

Here’s our first photo gallery from the Giglio Festival on Havemeyer Street in Williamsburg. The lift took place under a blazing sun at 2PM with a crowd that seemed smaller than usual, possibly because of the blistering heat. We decided to make the “faces” of the Giglio lift a separate photo gallery.

[Photo courtesy of sabeth718/flickr] The first Williamsburg Walks event took place yesterday under blazing sun and opposite the Siren Festival in Coney Island.
