This is a little something from Passengerpigeon (per Streetsy, which is the authority on such things), which we found on Driggs Avenue in the Burg.

Brooklyn Back in the Day: The Burg in 1958
October 19th, 2008 · 1 Comment
This is the Williamsburg waterfront fifty years ago, captured by photographer Jerry Dantzic in 1958. These were local kids making a raft under the Williamsburg Bridge. The photo comes from the Jerry Dantzic Archives.

Development Notebook: Hot Karl’s Union Avenue Work Coming Along
October 15th, 2008 · Comments Off on Development Notebook: Hot Karl’s Union Avenue Work Coming Along
This is the Karl Fischer building rising at Union Avenue and Ainslie Street in Williamsburg, whose actual address is 405 Union. This particular Hot Karl, which is centrally located right behind a Getty Gas Station and with a heartburn distance of the soon to re-open Kellogg’s Diner, not to mention the Gateway to Williamsburg, will […]

Development Notebook: Nothing Doing at 130 Grand
October 14th, 2008 · Comments Off on Development Notebook: Nothing Doing at 130 Grand
Looking for action at the corner of Grand Street and Berry Street in the Burg where some old buildings came down last year? Keep looking. Nothing’s happening. Whether this ends up being one of the Burg’s many (future) abandoned building sites remains to be seen. The only thing we know is that 130 Grand, which […]

And Now, a Late Night ‘Fracas’ on Bedford Avenue
October 13th, 2008 · 6 Comments
[Photo courtesy of annetran06/flickr] The night life in Williamsburg keeps getting more and more interesting. Things on the Southside have been more insane for a while with reports of gang machete fights and random robberies and stabbings. There’s been less news from the Northside, and especially from Bedford Ave., but a reader reports on a […]

Barack in the Burg: He’s Everywhere
October 12th, 2008 · Comments Off on Barack in the Burg: He’s Everywhere
Landslide coming? Or will it come down to five votes in Ohio or (please God, no) Florida? What we do know is that signs of Barack Obama are everywhere in Williamsburg.

Eye on the Street: Supine on Kent
October 10th, 2008 · 1 Comment
This is a Judith Supine work on Kent Avenue near Metropolitan in Williamsburg. Like much of her work, we dig it a lot. The interesting, non-art-related back story involves the building to which it is affixed. It is a paint factory with enough toxic issues to keep environmental regulators busy for a long time and […]

Development Notebook: The Slowest Karl is Still Sloooow
October 10th, 2008 · Comments Off on Development Notebook: The Slowest Karl is Still Sloooow
We think it may be safe to call this the slowest Karl Fischer building going up in all of Brooklyn. The building is at N. 8 & Roebling, only a few blocks from the architect’s master work on Karl Fischer Row, and work has been going on since late 2006 (a basement was never excavated). […]

Bkliink: “Youth Fight Scares Off Cops” in Burg
October 10th, 2008 · 1 Comment
“There was a massive youth street battle yesterday right by the Williamsburg Bridge street entrance, that ended with some bloodied faces and frightened cops. A reader wrote in and said that while sitting at a traffic light just outside Ortis funeral home, they saw a bunch of kids (12-15) acting rowdy and yelling, while a […]

Development Notebook: Burg Bldg From Calif. Teachers & Lehman Bros. Rising
October 10th, 2008 · 1 Comment
Work is moving ahead at 40 Berry Street, which will be a seven-story, 142-unit rental building from the studios of Perkins Eastman. The site has had its issues both with oil on the site from ruptured tanks and with dangerous conditions at the site itself, which led us to dub it the Mud Pit of […]

Brooklyn Nibbles: Brick Oven Gallery Morphs Into Kenny’s Trattoria
October 9th, 2008 · 4 Comments
This is Kenny’s Trattoria, which our friends at Eater reported on recently. It’s the successor to one of our Burg nabe favorites, the Brick Oven Gallery which closed a couple of months ago. Well, the owner has made good on his promise to return. The new places is described as “an Italian restaurant with a […]

Bklink: Most Expensive Burg Condo Sale Ever
October 9th, 2008 · Comments Off on Bklink: Most Expensive Burg Condo Sale Ever
Well, the record’s been set for the most expensive Burg condo sale ever and one of Brooklyn’s Top Ten. The honor goes to the Edge, the waterfront development on Kent Avenue, which sold two penthouses for $5.145 million. Safe to assume the buyer didn’t work for Lehman Brothers.–Curbed

Even in Graffiti, Obama Rules in the Burg
October 8th, 2008 · 2 Comments
There is much pro-Barack Obama stuff to be found in Williamsburg right now, including graffiti. (Most of it, though, is street art, t-shirts, stickers and the like.) We found this politically-charged tag on the construction fence surrounding our favorite Mystery Toxic Lot at 95 Bedford Avenue where, in reality, Karl Fischer will ultimately change everything.

Old Burg Building on N. 8 on the Rental Market
October 7th, 2008 · 1 Comment
We love this building at 184 N. 8 Street in Williamsburg, which has served among a great many things, as a magnificent canvas for successive generations of street art. Earlier this year, there were rumors that the building would be demolished. Apparently, word of its demise was greatly exaggerated. The building is actually available as […]

GL Photo Du Jour: Happy Heart
October 7th, 2008 · 1 Comment
Yeah, we’d normally make this part of our Eye on the Street series, but this happy heart from the Burg says a certain something that causes us to post it as a Photo Du Jour because it is a heart and it is happy.

Toxic Bedford Ave. Lot Getting Pounded
October 7th, 2008 · 2 Comments
The “mystery lot” at the corner of N. 11 Street and Bedford Avenue is a muddy mess, which one presumes helps hold down any toxic dust that might blow around, but work is already going forward on the big Karl Fischer rental building that will rise on the property. The official address is 95 Bedford […]

This is 111 Kent Avenue, which is known as (gasp) 111 Kent. It is rising across the street from East River State Park. The building has 62 units and has been designed to make the most of views of Manhattan that won’t be blocked. There will be a rooftop pool, two sundecks, a gym, a […]

Big Obama Bake Sale Weekend in Brooklyn
October 6th, 2008 · 2 Comments
A lot of cup cakes and other sweet things were sold in Brooklyn this weekend to raise money for the presidential campaign of Barack Obama. They may or may not have raised significants funds, but there was certainly a big “isn’t that cute” factor as a lot of the Obama bake sale personnel were very […]

Development Notebook: Doing the Crawl at Burg’s N. 10 & Berry
September 17th, 2008 · Comments Off on Development Notebook: Doing the Crawl at Burg’s N. 10 & Berry
There is much competition for the Slowest Building in Williamsburg title, but one of the Top Five Contenders is this building going up at the corner of N. 10 and Berry. If it seems like it has been under construction forever, it sort of has. Work has been underway for more than a year and […]

This is 268 Wythe Avenue in Williamsburg, which is going up at the corner of Wythe and Metropolitan in Williamsburg. It comes from MDIM Architects. The building will be seven stories tall and have 17 condos. It shouldn’t be long before we’ll be able to tell whether the exterior will actually match the rendering (below).

Street Couch Series: Grand Street Special
September 15th, 2008 · Comments Off on Street Couch Series: Grand Street Special
This excellent specimen comes via a very Special GL Correspondent. It was found on Grand Street between Graham and Humboldt and we particularly like the way that the darkness and reflections give it the look a sofa in a lounge, albeit a sort of trashy one.
