It’s long and it’s sort of this newly-posted hipster Williamsburg holiday thing, but hey, it’s the Friday after Christmas and perhaps you have the time to devote to the bitter irony of it.

Coney Island Deathwatch: FOR LEASE
December 26th, 2008 · 1 Comment
These are just a few of the pics that Jack Szwergold shot in Coney Island yesterday of all the “FOR LEASE” that have been put up. He has posted a full photoset that includes equally depressing Astroland Destructoporn shots. What a shitty ass thing to have to see the day after Christmas. And what a depressing thing it must have been to take in on Christmas Day. Jack Writes:
I haven’t been to Coney Island in a while and decided to go down on Christmas Day to see how badly new developers are treating the place. Yeah, a negative sentiment. But on Christmas Eve, Thor Equities (the developer that now owns a disturbing amount of Coney Island) put “For Lease” signs up on tons of beloved business. What a nice bunch of guys!
FWIW, for anyone saying that the place needs to be cleaned up, you know what: I completely agree with you. But going about it this way and destroying so much without giving back is simply selfish and the wrong way.
We’re so sad about this all we can hardly bring ourselves to go down there.

Effort to Stop the Jail with Retail Turns Up the Volume
December 26th, 2008 · 2 Comments
The Stop BHOD coalition formed to end the New York government’s attempt to re-populate and expand the Brooklyn House of Detention (over on Atlantic b/w Smith & Boerhum Place) has relaunched its website and also added a blog. In addition, they will be holding a rally outside the State Supreme Court building in Cadman Plaza Park 9am, Tuesday (1/6/09).
State Senator Eric Adams, Council Member Letitia James and the NYCHA tenant groups have joined the lawsuit against the re-population and expansion. Also taking part in this suit (originally filed last month by Comptroller William C. Thompson and Council Member David Yassky) are Atlantic Avenue Betterment Association, the Atlantic Avenue LDC, the Cobble Hill Association and Stop BHOD. A release describes the whole mess as:
This extreme waste of tax payers money ($440 million for the Brooklyn facility and another $500 million for one in the Bronx) is also a concern for correction policy – “lock ’em up” rather than attempt to rehabilitate. The City has repeatedly declared its intention to nearly double the size of its closed Brooklyn House of Detention on Atlantic Avenue, yet has not informed or engaged the public about the re-opening of the expansion project, nor has it followed any of the state or city laws which compel it to conduct a detailed analysis to determine environmental and community impacts. Meanwhile, the City has re-opened the jail and budgeted more than $1 billion for new jail construction throughout the City – already entering into contract to spend more than $30 million on architects – all during one of the worst financial crises in New York’s history.
The Brooklyn House of Detention was closed in 2003 because of a declining prison population, sizable capacity available for prisoners at Rikers Island, and in order to save money on the costs of running an extra jail. Soon after, however, the Bloomberg administration announced plans to build a towering new structure atop the exiting jail, nearly doubling its size and adding 700 new beds.
Any odds on whether this thing happens when the fighting stops?

More Sad Christmas Eve FOR LEASE Images from Coney
December 24th, 2008 · 1 Comment
Coney Island woke up on this Christmas Eve morning to huge FOR LEASE signs affixed to every building on the boardwalk. All the photos above are courtesy of Pablo Jonesy who was out there at 7:30 this morning. Apparently owners will be offered new leases by December 30, but the rumor is that rents may skyrocket. There is a conference call said to be scheduled today. Per an email, “This may just be a tactic move on Thors part to push city and owners. We hope.” Us too.

Our favorite Williamsburg eating spot, Kellogg’s Diner has been all done up for the holidays. And what a job they’ve done. We’re foregoing Brooklinks this morning so we can go out and run soggy Christmas Eve errands and letting the diner do the talking.

A Holiday Greeting from Councilman David Yassky
December 24th, 2008 · 2 Comments
We had a very long and very pleasant chat yesterday evening with New York City Council Member David Yassky, with whom we have had some strong policy disagreements over the years and whose intellect and public policy credentials we have always respected. We will write more about our conversation with Mr. Yassky, when more people are tuned in, particularly his views on North Brooklyn development as the economy changes. In the meantime, we invited him, in the spirit of the season to make a brief holiday greeting.

Awful, Depressing Christmas Eve Developments in Coney Island
December 24th, 2008 · 8 Comments
We don’t have the full story of what happened in Coney Island yesterday, except that the we got a phone message from Diana carlin (Lola Staar) that people were being evicted. Meanwhile, photos we being posted on the Coney Island Message Board of “For Lease” signs going up on all the boardwalk businesses. One is tempted to start writing things about Scrooge and the insanity of doing something like this two days before Christmas, but we’ve also seen comments that new leases will be forthcoming. And comments that rents may triple. We will try to get more information and update if we can, but it’s Christmas Eve. (All photos are courtesy of Captain Jonesy on the Coney Island Message Board.) The signs speak for themselves. The question is what is goiing on.
